A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
