Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
